If you’ve ever dined in a beautifully designed restaurant only to be distracted by an icy blast of air from above, you’re not alone. In fact, this is a common issue caused by improper HVAC diffuser selection or airflow distribution — something that often gets overlooked until patrons start asking to change tables.
Take a look at the photos above. In this upscale dining setting, the ceiling-mounted linear slot diffusers were not properly selected or configured. The result? Uncomfortable downward drafts blowing directly onto customers. The makeshift fix? Installing hanging plexiglass panels to divert the air. While functional, it’s a band-aid solution that detracts from the aesthetics and ambiance of the space.
How to Address the Problem Properly
1. Start with Proper Air Balancing
Before making any hardware changes, a test and balance (TAB) of the HVAC system should be conducted. Often, excessive airflow is delivered through a small number of slots, leading to high velocity and discomfort. Rebalancing the supply air to reduce the CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) in over-performing diffusers is step one.
2. Adjust Pattern Controllers
Most linear diffusers are equipped with pattern controllers, allowing the airflow to be directed sideways rather than straight down. In many cases, a simple adjustment can completely eliminate drafts over tables or seating areas.
3. Rethink the Slot Count or Size
If air still needs to be supplied at that location, the next step is to reduce velocity by:
- Increasing the number of slots (e.g., from 1-slot to 2- or 3-slot diffusers)
- Increasing the slot width to allow more air to be distributed at lower velocity
- Distributing air more evenly across multiple diffusers
4. Architectural and Mechanical Coordination is Key
This issue is a classic example of poor coordination between mechanical design and architectural layout. HVAC engineers must work closely with interior designers to ensure air is delivered effectively without disrupting the customer experience.
The Bottom Line:
Restaurants are designed to be welcoming, comfortable, and visually pleasing. But even the best decor and cuisine can’t make up for cold drafts or noisy airflow. A properly selected and balanced linear diffuser system makes all the difference — keeping the air moving, but the customers happy.
